Mission Statement of the Asian Activities Committee

The Asian-RAC is one of the Regional Activities Committees of the IGS, which encompasses the Asian and Australian regions. The Asian-RAC guides and oversees the chapters in these regions with the planning and organizing of different conferences and training programs in their respective chapters. The Chairperson of this committee acts as the Chairperson of the Advisory Committee for all conferences organized within this region under the auspices of the IGS.

Typically, Asian-RAC meetings are held during the IGS council meetings. Meetings may also be arranged at major conferences within the Australasian region for attracting a larger forum. All members of IGS from these regions are welcome to attend the committee meetings.

International Seminar on Natural Disaster Mitigation with Geosynthetics, Quezon City, the Philippines

The Committee is actively pursuing the following tasks:

• Advising the conduct of the Asian Regional Conference on Geosynthetics at New Delhi during 8 – 11 November 2016.
• Planning training programs (Educate the Educators, short courses) in Southeast Asia and Iran in the year 2016.
• Providing help to other Task Forces of the IGS in liaising with chapters in this region.

RECENT ACTIVITIES

The Asian-RAC assisted the Vietnam Chapter with the organization of their first national symposium on “Geosynthetics Technology and Application” on 5 December 2014 at the National University of Civil Engineering, Hanoi. Four of the committee members, Profs. Kuwano, Yoo, Bergado, and Rajagopal, represented the IGS at the event and gave lectures. The same team also presented lectures on geosynthetics to the students of Ho Chi Minh University of Technology at Ho Chi Minh City on 4 December 2015.

The Asian-RAC assisted the Philippines chapter organize two seminars at Davao and Quezon cities in August 2015 by appointing two speakers to the events, Prof. Bergado and Prof. Kuwano. Two of the chapters in Asia have celebrated the 30th anniversary of their annual geosynthetics symposium.

The Indian chapter celebrated their 30-year symposium anniversary 5-6 November 2015 in New Delhi, India. The chapter organized the two-day International Symposium titled Geosynthetics – The Road Ahead on this occasion. Prof. CS Yoo was the guest of honor from the IGS on this occasion.

The Japanese chapter celebrated the 30th anniversary of their annual symposium on geosynthetics 3-4 December 2015 in Tokyo, Japan. Prof. G. Venkatappa Rao, representing the Indian Chapter, and Dr. Nguyen Hoang Giang, representing the Vietnamese Chapter, were invited to the symposium and delivered special lectures.
