The Technical Committee on Barrier Systems (TC-B) is dedicated to the scientific and engineering development of geosynthetic barrier systems and associated technologies. This committee promotes the knowledge, technology, research findings, design, and construction methodologies related to geosynthetic barrier applications, such as guarding against seepage loss, preventing infiltration, improving the flow of fluids, protecting groundwater, and isolating contaminated soils in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering.

The Committee is currently pursuing the following tasks:

The TC-B is running a series of webinars focussing on specific technical issues of barrier manufacturing, installation and performance while international travel is limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The TC-B has tasked members to compile newly written leaflets on specific barrier related topics.  These include; landfill, mining, groundwater protection, hydraulic engineering, wastewater, agriculture/aquaculture, oil and gas and coal ash.  Once the leaflets are compiled it is the intention to generate a voiceover PowerPoint presentation on each of the geosynthetic barrier applications.

The TC-B is producing an educational video on geosynthetic applications in landfill for the university lecture series.  If you have any photos or video material that could be included in the video please send these to the IGS Secretary Elise Oatman.

The TC-B is collaborating with the GSI to compile a Worldwide Database of Guidelines/Regulations using Geosynthetic Barriers, see https://lnkd.in/dVumpjX.  We need everyone to participate in this in order to build up a comprehensive database.

Future Activities of the TC-B

The TC-B is in the early stages of planning a follow-up discussion workshop session, likely in 2023. Topics for this workshop have yet to be decided.

Important note: In the past, all TC-B members were contacted by the IGS to fill out the new membership form, which included General Data Protection Regulation consents. Members who have not returned completed forms are encouraged to do so.
